FAQ’s About Contactless Cards

How does it work?

Contactless cards use radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. This allows the card to communicate with the card reader when the card is held near the reader during a transaction. Each contactless transaction creates a unique, one-time code or password.  It is important to note that you will need to make a purchase using the Chip and Pin payment option before the contactless card option can be used.  This does not include ATM transactions.

Are contactless payments secure?

Yes, transactions are processed using the same security measures as chip card technology and backed by the same fraud protection. Each transaction includes a unique code that prevents stolen transaction data from being reused.

How do I know if my debit card is contactless enabled?

Look for the wave-like contactless indicator symbol on the front of your debit card to determine if it is capable of contactless payments.  If your card does not have this symbol, you can still use your card by inserting or swiping.

What if the terminal doesn’t have a contactless symbol?

Contactless cards also have an EMV chip and a magnetic stripe.  This gives cardholders options of how to use the card at checkout.

Why isn’t my current card contactless?

A contactless card will be issued prior to the expiration date of your current card.
